Mary E. (Shibe) Phelps, 96, passed away on Friday, September 28, 2012. Mary lived in Alton and was active in her church, civic groups, and the Eastern Star. She drove for the American Cancer Association for many years. She loved playing the piano and served several area churches as organist and pianist. She loved to sew, make pies and make quilts for her family. On July 15, 1934 in Alton, she married Hubert B. Phelps. They were married for 75 years. Upon retirement Mary and Hubert lived in Hollister, Missouri. Hubert preceded her in death on August 30, 2008. Surviving are her children, Richard S. Phelps and his wife Sherrell of College Station, Texas, and Barbara Phelps Graves and her husband Merle of Overland Park, Kansas. Mary has six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until time of funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 5, 2012 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Reverend Dave Olson will officiate. Burial will be at Ebenezer Cemetery in Jacksonville, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the loving staff of the Memory Care Unit B, Bickford Place, 10665 Barkley, Overland Park, Kansas 66212.
