Mary Corrine Murphy, 96, died at 5:30 a.m. Monday, January 10, 2011 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born June 29, 1914 in East St. Louis, IL, she was the daughter of Camile and Zelia (Chartrand) Etienne. She was a charter member of Lockhaven County Club and participated in the women’s golf group and was also a member of the Alton-Florida Golf Group with Lockhaven. She volunteered with the Ladies Auxiliary at St. Joseph Hospital and enjoyed playing bridge. She was a member of the Godfrey Women’s Club and SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton. On June 1, 1938 in East St. Louis, she married Dr. Joseph Anthony Murphy. He preceded her in death on May 9, 1998.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph “Jay” and Mary K. Murphy of Alton, Robert Edward and Mary “Mimi” Murphy of Morrison, CO, and Thomas Edmund and Manna G. Murphy of Des Moines, Iowa, one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Jean and Thomas Mathews of Ft. Wayne, IN, 13 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, two nieces, Mary Lou Humbarger and her husband David and Susan Murphy and a nephew, James Kuebel and his wife Barb. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Kuebel and Pauline Mollman.
Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Father Nnamdi Moneme, OMV, will officiate.
