Marietta Bates

Marietta M. Bates, 74, died at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, October 21, 2010 at St. Anthony's Hospital in Alton.


She was born in Calhoun County on Oct. 17, 1936 the second youngest child born to the late Carl & Louise (Telkamp) Mossman. She graduated in 1954 from Jersey Community High School and from St. Joseph's Hospital.  She was a Medical Laboratory Technician for over 40 years, and worked in numerous doctor's offices retiring in 1996 from Dr. Leo Green of Alton.  She was a life member of the American Medical Technologists Association (AMT), a volunteer Ombudsman in the Department of Aging for several years, Legion of St. Mary, St. Vincent DePaul, and Jersey County Home Extension. Marietta was also a devoted and active member of the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Beltrees, and after its closing attended both St. Francis Xavier in Jerseyville and St. Patrick's in Grafton.  She was a loving wife, mother & grandmother, and will be sadly missed by all who knew her for her gentle ways of sending cards and notes tho those she knew.


She marreid Robert B. Bates on May 25, 1957 in Alton, and they shared 45 years together and raised their family before his death on Oct. 17, 2002.


Surviving are two sons & daughters in law, Greg & Dixie Bates of Grafton and David & Sarah Bates of Dow; a daughter & son in law,  Sarah & Paul Braundmeier of Fieldon; five grandchildren, Abby, and her husband Aaron Bass of Maryville, Ashley Bates & Emily Bates both of Alton, Erin Bates of Dow, and Eric Braundmeier of Fieldon; two sisters and a brother in law, Doris Tepen of Brussels and Jean & Lee Rowling of Grafton; a brother & sister in law, Leland & Betty Mossman of Grand Island, Ne.; a brother in law, Elmer Kiel of Meppen; and three sisters in law, Marie Mossman of Sullivan, Nelda Jean Pierce of Fenton and Bernice Bates of Jerseyville.


In addition to her parents & husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Pamela; three brothers, Carl Jr., Paul and Richard "Dick" Mossman; and two sisters, Lois Kiel and Leola Held.


Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.


A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 1 p.m Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father Patrick Gibbons officiating.


Burial will take place in the St. Michaels Catholic Cemetery in Beltrees.


Memorials may be given to the St. Michael's Cemetery Fund, St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools or to the Oblate Priests.
