Marie Ann Dawson, 84, loving wife, mother to four children, and beautiful "Nana" to six grandchildren, passed away Saturday, September 23, 2023 at River Crossing of Edwardsville.
Born October 22, 1938 in Wood River, the daughter of Peter and Helen (Barnes) Spano.
She married Joe C. Dawson on July 25, 1959 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Wood River. He died July 14, 2004.
Marie worked at East Alton-Wood River Community High School for many years before leaving and accepting a position with AVSCOM (US Army Aviation Systems Command) and later the Internal Revenue Service before retiring.
She had been a life-long parishioner at Holy Angels Parish Church (St. Bernard Catholic Church) in Wood River and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Doug Dawson of Fairview Heights, Kevin Dawson (Jodi Wongler) of Wood River, Michelle "Shelly" (Ed) Hess of West Plains, MO, Teri (Kevin) McCarty of Glen Carbon; grandchildren, Courtney (Kellen) O'Keefe, Sarah (Zack) Hayes, Emily (Riley) Smith, Jacob Hess, Rachel Hess, Christopher Dawson; three great grandchildren, Everett and Addie Hess, Oliver O'Keefe; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Louis "Butch" Spano, Pete Spano; sister, Donna Manns; and life-long friends, Margaret and Bill Seaton.
Visitation will be from 4-7 pm, Friday, September 29 at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am, Saturday at Holy Angels Parish Church in Wood River. Father Donald Wolford will officiate.
Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
