Lynwood H. France, 95, passed away at 1:40 pm, Friday, April 18, 2014 in Alton, IL.  

He was born in Staunton, IL on May 20, 1918 the son of the late Roy V. and Frieda A. (Beyer) France.

He married Letha B. Davidson Dunnagan on October 21, 1959 in Godfrey, IL, having 55 years of marriage.

Lynwood served in the U.S. Army in the 1st Armor Division during WWII where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. During his service time, he was bestowed the honor of a Purple Heart and was an Honor Guard at General Patton’s funeral.  He then served in the Army Reserve Unit #936 Maintenance Company for 35 years.  While serving in the Army Reserves, he worked at Olin Brass as a tool and die maker, retiring from both in 1979.  He enjoyed music, working on cars, golfing, bowling and boating.  His greatest joy was spending time with all of his family and friends, especially his wife and children.  He was a member of Godfrey Baptist Church, VFW Post #1308, Alton Motor Boat Club, and Alton-Wood River Sportsman’s Club.  

He is survived by his wife Letha, 5 children and their spouses: Jeff and Linda Dunnagan of Godfrey, Greg Dunnagan of Godfrey, Missy and Bill Kasten of Godfrey, Kimberly (France) Ruby of Godfrey, and Cynthia and Bill Robinette of Las Vegas, NV., 1 brother: Raymond France of NC, 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson: Taylor E. Jones.

Visitation will be from 5 pm to 8 pm on Monday, April 21, 2014 at Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home with Reverend Glenn Greenwood officiating.

Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park, Godfrey, IL. Military Rites will be accorded by Alton VFW Post #1308.

Memorials may be made to Godfrey Baptist Church or Donor’s Choice.
