Lucy Overbey Sadler, 93, passed away at 12:25 a.m. Monday, July 26, 2010 at her home in Godfrey.
She was born Dec. 20, 1916 in Stoddard County, Mo., the daughter of the late Harry and Vallie (Revelle) Johns. She grew up in southeast Missouri.
Lucy married Carl Overbey on June 16, 1934 in Bloomfield, Mo. He died Apr. 5, 1994 after almost 60 years of marriage. Later she married Herbert Sadler, who also preceded her in death.
Since 1943 she had made the Alton area her home, except for a ten year post-retirement return to her hometown in 1976. Lucy was a loving wife and mother and a devoted extended family member to both the Johns and Overbey families. She worked extensively on genealogy for both sides of the family, loved quilting, scrap booking, and traveling. In addition to being "everything" to her children, Lucy was employed at Owens-Illinois Glass Co. for 29 years in the selecting department.
Surviving are three children, Betty ("Hoolie") Bowermaster of Hartford, Jerry (Nancy) Overbey of Lincoln, Ill., and Georgia Unthank of Godfrey; a daughter-in-law, Mary Overbey of Waterloo; "50" grandchildren, her greatest joy, which includes grands, great grands and great-great grands; a sister, Vivian Hodge of Puxico, Mo.; a brother, Bobby Johns of Otterville; several sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a son, Walter Overbey; and seven brothers, Wilburn, Willard, Vernon, Virgil, Calvin, L.E., and Harry Lee Johns.
Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. with a funeral service at 6 p.m. Friday, July 30 at Paynic Home for Funerals in East Alton, Ill. Pastor Paul Guerin will officiate.
Burial with graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31 at Morgan Cemetery in Advance, Mo., with nephew, Pastor Dennis Doublin officiating.
