Louis F. Chappee, 87, died at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at Alton Memorial Hospital.
Born June 25, 1922 in Alton, he was the son of Frank and Jessie (Abel) Chappee. He attended Alton public Schools and graduated from Alton High School. He then attended the University of Illinois. He played softball and baseball and coached boy’s teams. Mr. Chappee was a charter member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church where he served on the Pastoral Council and was a member of the Funeral Choir. He enjoyed delving into genealogy and compiled a written history of the Chappee family. He retired from Laclede Steel Company after 40 years of service. He worked first as an Electrical Maintenance Supervisor and later as an Electrical Design Engineer. He was a member of Alpha Rho Chi Fraternity and the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers. On October 18, 1944 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, he married the former Annette Wendle. She preceded him in death on November 28, 2006.
Surviving is a son, David Chappee of Alton, three daughters; Martha Steiner and her husband Kyle of Godfrey, Lucy Chappee and Jim Ryan of Alton, and Christine Dreith and her husband George of Godfrey, eight grandchildren; Matt Chappee, Jessa Wittman, Gina Mandorca, Kyle Steiner II, Colten Steiner, Shana Stephenson, Alison Dreith and Tyler Dreith and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters; Myra Faris and Dorothy Fisher.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Monday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. Monsignor Virgil Mank will officiate. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
