Little Pony Eagle, 89, of Godfrey, died at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at Jefferson Barracks Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Born January 19, 1923 in St. Joseph, MO, he was the son of Red Eagle and Goldie (Owen) Eagle. When he was 16 he received his promotion certificate from Roosevelt Junior High School and was believed to be the first true American Indian ever to graduate from an Alton public school. He served in the U.S. Army with the 5th Bomber Command during WWII in the Pacific Theatre and earned 5 Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. After his discharge from the Army in 1945, he attended Shurtleff College where he graduated with a degree in engineering. He retired as an engineer from McDonnell Douglas where in the 1960’s he worked on the Gemini Project. He was a Shriner and a 32nd Degree Mason with the Piasa Masonic Lodge #27 A.F. & A.M. His wife, Hazel (Fines) Eagle, preceded him in death on November 20, 2002. Surviving are two sisters, Eagle Feather Barker of Godfrey, and Two-Star Eagle of Alton, nine nieces and nephews, Monica Star Jerrells, Traci Dale Barker, Derrick Tyler Barker, Thomas Eagle DeMond, Lance J. DeMond (Nancy), Jeffrey Val DeMond, Rexford Jason DeMond, Bene’ Star Hentrich (Andy), and Lezlie Monique Kearney (Tim), and 12 great nieces and nephews. A memorial visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until Masonic Service at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey with full military honors. Memorials may be made to Red Cloud Indian School, 100 Mission Dr., Pine Ridge, SD 57770.
