Lewis William Payne, age 84, passed away at 1:28 p.m. Thursday, December 23, 2010 at his residence.

He was born on August 16, 1926 in Alpine, IN, the son of Arthur & Evan (Stevens) Payne.

He married Geraldine M. (Spaulding) in Dayton, OH on June 26, 1946.  She passed away November 14, 1989.

Lewis served his country in the United States Army, serving in Japan from 1942 to 1943. He was employed as a truck driver in Indiana then moving to St. Louis, working as a dispatcher and then worked for Beall Tool in East Alton.  He was a member of Main St. United Methodist Church, the Eagles Lodge in Connersville, IN, Alton VFW Post # 1308, Alton American Legion Post # 126 and the Wood River Masonic Lodge # 1062 AF&AM.  He loved to travel, watch the St. Louis Cardinals especially Whitey Herzog manage and spend time with his family and friends.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gregory & Angie Payne of Alton; one daughter, Debra L. Payne of Godfrey; four grandchildren, Tricia, Andrea, Amy and Jennifer and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife and three sisters, Carol Payne, Marge Richardson and Shirley Brett.

Per his wishes cremation rites were accorded.

Memorials may be given to the Wood River Masonic Lodge # 1062 AF&AM and or the Alton VFW Post # 1308.
