Leslie "Les" H. Applegate, 71, of Godfrey, passed away on November 10, 2023, at his home.
He was born on September 29, 1952, to James and Eileen (Foster) Applegate in Alton. Les was an Alton High School graduate. On October 22, 1978, he married his sweetheart, Lataua Baker in Houston, TX. They celebrated 45 years of marriage. She survives.
Les was a third generation Brick Mason and worked for Granite City Steel for over 25 years before retiring. He was a member of the Local 8. In his younger years, he worked and traveled all over the country as a stone and brick mason. Les was passionate about his career and it showed through his skill and artistry. His stone craft was beautiful. He was an Eagle Scout as a young man, making lifelong memories and friends. Les was an old bottle digger and a picker who enjoyed going to yard sales, auctions, and resale and antique shops. He grew up traveling with his parents, and later loved to travel with his wife and son. Les enjoyed being outdoors and would hike, fish, camp, and go to festivals whenever he could. He loved history and science and was very knowledgeable on a variety of subjects. Les was known for being "Google" before "Google" was created. He was a storyteller. Les would end one story and go right into the next one. He loved music, especially classic rock. Les would spend hours creating play lists and even more hours listening to them. And don't you dare tell him to turn his music down. Les loved to host and entertain. The door was always open and was a second dad to many of his son's friends. He was a kind and giving man. Les loved to spoil his family and friends. Visitors couldn't leave the house with empty hands.
Les is survived by his loving wife, Lataua; son, Todd, who was his pride and joy; daughter-in-law, Jessica, his personal helper and a woman that Les couldn't have picked anyone that was more perfect for his son; two grandsons, Austin and Avery, whom he loved and cherished with all of his heart; two brothers, Jerry (Angie) Burrell of Dallas, TX, and James Applegate of Collinsville; and his four legged companion, Forest and granddogs, Ben and River.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Applegate; and mother, Eileen Bordeau.
Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded and professional services are handled by Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton.
The family will be hosting a Celebration of Life at a later date.
