Leonard Martin McCormick, age 80, unexpectedly passed away and went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 15, 2012.
He was born on June 7, 1932 in East Alton. He was the son of the late Edgar Lee & Effie Caroline (Farmer) McCormick.
He married Shirley Marie (Kelly) on February 15, 1957 in East Alton. Shirley’s was Leonard’s true love and they spent all their time together.
Leonard served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War, serving on the USS Oriskany receiving an accommodation from the ship’s Captain for his help with putting out a fire on ship, saving the ship and crew. He was employed with Shell Oil Company as an operator and then operations manager working for 34 years, retiring in 1991. He then drove a school bus for the Wood River/Hartford School district for 10 years and with the help of his wife was the co-owner of the Wood River Farm Fresh, along with his brother and sister in law, Albert and Joan Unthank. Leonard was a member of the Bethalto Church of God, where he was a deacon, on the board, Sunday school teacher, choir director and soundman. He loved to golf, bowl, played baseball in the Navy and softball for the church.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jill & David Bruce of Aubrey, TX, a son, Jeff McCormick of East Alton, three grandchildren, Christopher and wife Melissa Bruce of Suquamish, WA, Aaron McCormick of East Alton and Daniel Bruce of Aubrey, TX, a great grandson, Eli Bruce of Suquamish, WA, a brother and sister-in-law, Ben & Norma Houston, TX and a sister, Jo Stephenson of East Alton.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 4 pm to 8 pm on Monday, June 18, 2012 at the Bethalto Church of God in Bethalto.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at the Bethalto Church of God with Pastor J.T. Kelly, Pastor David Bruce and Pastor Jeremy Robinson officiating.
Burial will be private at Rose Lawn Memories Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be given to the Make a Wish of Missouri.
