Leola “Lee” Mary Carter, 83, died at 3:50 a.m. Sunday, January 26, 2014 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born January 12, 1931 in Brussels, IL, she was the daughter of Leo and Mary Bopp. On July 30, 1949 she married Robert “Bob” Bruce Carter Sr. Mrs. Carter was a member of the Upper Alton Baptist Church. She had been a square dancer for 50 years and also enjoyed quilting, sewing and photography. One of her great joys was spending time with her family. In 1992 she retired from the United States Post Office after 21 years of service.

Along with her husband surviving are three sons, Robert “Bob” Carter Jr. (Rose Mary) of Alton, Donald J. Carter (Pamela) of Madison, WI, and Ronald Lee Carter (Jan) of Lee’s Summit, MO, seven grandchildren, Brian Carter (Becka), Erin Carter O’Brien (Jim), Matthew Carter (Erin), Jennifer Stegall (Billy), Michelle Carter, Kristie Carter, and Nicole Carter, five great grandchildren, Millie Carter O’Brien, Carter Stegall, Fiona Carter O’Brien, Henry Carter, and Shaylee Carter, a brother, Bill Bopp (Hector) of Van Nuys, CA, and a sister, Shirley McCann of Lakeland, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Larry and Marion Bopp.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the Upper Alton Baptist Church. Reverend Brad Donoho will officiate.

Memorials may be made to the Upper Alton Baptist Church or the American Heart Association. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
