Lawrence Szwargulski

Alton |

Lawrence "Larry" E. Szwargulski, 79, of Alton, IL, passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday, January 6, 2025. Born on January 9, 1945, in St. Louis, MO, Larry was the son of the late Eugene "Jim" and Helen (Hartgraver) Szwargulski. He was preceded in death by his great nephew, Corey Genteman and family friend Ken Halveland.

On August 7, 1971, he married the love of his life, Pamella L. Yates, in Bethalto, IL. Together, they built a life filled with love, faith, and family.

Larry honorably served his country as a proud veteran of the United States Navy, spending his time aboard the USS Oriskany CVA-34 during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he dedicated his life to providing for his family, most recently working as a school bus driver for Illinois Central of Alton.

A devout Christian, Larry was a member of Bethalto Church of God and a former member of Beltline Christian Center. His unwavering faith shaped every aspect of his life, from his steadfast prayers over his family to his deep devotion for studying the Word of God. Larry's greatest passion was to love and lead others to the Lord. Although a quiet witness, a witness he was. He understood that people need the Lord and it was his heartfelt prayer to have his loved ones follow God.

Larry found immense joy in his family, cherishing every moment spent with his treasured grandchildren. From building forts and giving "bull rides" to celebrating their achievements, Larry’s love for his grandchildren was boundless. He also enjoyed hosting gatherings with Pamella at their home, where laughter and good food often accompanied friendly card games.

Along with his devoted wife, Pamella, he is survived by his daughter, Tracy (Jay) Bentley of Dorsey, his adored grandchildren, Ryan, Caleb, and Adelynn; and his siblings, Terry (Mary) Szwargulski of Washington, MO, Garry Szwargulski of High Ridge, MO, Debbie Dunham of Warrenton, MO, and Michael Szwargulski of Florissant, MO.

His life was a testament to love, kindness, and faith. As a husband, he was a faithful provider and protector; as a father and grandfather, he was an encourager, comforter, and spiritual guide. His gentle heart, genuine loyalty, and steadfast prayers left a legacy of love that will live on through his family.

He was kind, generous, and honorable in every aspect of his life. He was loved immensely and will be missed deeply. Larry’s last words: I’ve been promoted to Glory!

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025, form 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Pastor Jacob Skelton as officiant.

Military honors will follow the service, performed by Alton VFW Post 1308.

Memorials may be made to the family and/or Bethalto Church of God and/or Beltline Christian Center.
