Larry Gene Hazen, 71, died at 1:35 p.m. Monday, October 2, 2017 at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home after a 14-month battle with Merkel Cell Carcinoma. Born December 21, 1945 in Alton, he was the son of Albert and Carmella (Panapinto) Hazen. Mr. Hazen served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey and retired from Roberts Ford in 2005 after 29 years as a mechanic/service writer. He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for over 10 years. He was a 13-year volunteer fireman for Godfrey and a long standing member of the Alton Motorboat Club where he served as treasurer for several years. Larry was active with the MS 150 Bike Ride and rode with the Piasa Peddlers Group which raised over $20,000. He volunteered at Rolling Hills Golf Course for many years, loved to travel with his grandchildren and enjoyed his winter months in Arizona. On August 16, 1974 he married the former Jeanette Gobble in Alton. She survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Shannon (Jeff) Lauritzen of Godfrey, two grandchildren, Karoline and Kristine Lauritzen, one brother, Harry (Susy) Hazen of Alton, a niece, Yvonne (Cliff) Rushton, and a nephew, Albert (Cindy) Hazen. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Albert Hazen Jr. A prayer service will begin at 4:00 p.m. following by visitation until 8:00 p.m. Friday October 13, 2017 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 14, 2017 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey followed by full military honors by the VFW Post 1308. Burial will be private. Memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Gateway Area Chapter or to Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home to purchase recliners for resident’s rooms.
