Kathryn "Kay" D. Kennedy, 89, of Alton, Illinois, passed away at 6:22 p.m. peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Alton Memorial Hospital.
Kay was born on October 2, 1935, in Alton, IL, to Franklin Daniel and Elith (Nickell) Travis. She married Maurice Kennedy on July 30, 1955, and they shared many years of love and companionship until his passing on March 21, 2018.
She earned her Bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) and dedicated her career to teaching. Kay was an Elementary Art and Second Grade teacher for the Alton School District, where she made a lasting impact on many young lives. She was also an active member of College Avenue Presbyterian Church in Alton, where she enjoyed participating in the choir and hand bell choir.
Kay was passionate about traveling and camping at National Parks through out the United States. She cherished time spent walking her beloved golden retriever, Jack. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.), and had a deep affection for animals, especially cats and dogs.
She is survived by three sons, Mark R. (Teresa) Kennedy of Edwardsville, IL, Scott Kennedy of St. Petersburg, FL, and Kyle (Dawn) Kennedy of Godfrey, IL. She also leaves behind grandchildren Sydney (Ben) Lauschke, Sawyer Kennedy, Lindsey (Jaydon) Arico, Tyler Kennedy, and Hillary Harris (Brian Crites), along with a niece, nephew, and several cousins.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Daniel F. Travis.
The family has entrusted Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Homes and Crematory with cremation services.
Memorials are suggested to the 5A’s Animal Shelter or the American Cancer Society.
