Julius Henry Challandes Jr

Julius Henry Challandes Jr., age 80, passed away at 10:20 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 2012 at his home with his family by his side.

He was born on June 23, 1931 in Calhoun Co, Illinois, the son of the late Julius & Freda (Curtis) Challandes Sr.

He married Winona (Peacock) on November 28, 1952 in Bloomington, IL.  She survives.

Julius attended Palmyra High School.  He served his country in the United States Navy from 1948 until 1952 during the Korean Conflict.  He was employed at McDonald Douglas in St. Louis for 22 years as a machinist, Shell Oil Co. in Wood River for 9 years and General Steel in Granite City for 10 years as a machinist.  Julius enjoyed woodworking where he made toys and furniture, camping, traveling with his wife in and out of the country and spending time with his grandchildren. 

In addition to his wife he is survived by three children and their spouses; Jeff & Sheri Challandes of Edwardsville, Phillip & Kim Challandes of Bethalto, David Challandes and friend Kay Smith of Brazil, IN; five grandchildren, Chris and his wife Karen, Kristin, Shelby, Carly and Casey; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Eva Walden of Carrollton, IL and Wanda & Dan Pedigo of Chatham IL and his nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ervin and Wayne Challandes.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto

Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 12, 2012 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto, with Pastor Dale Skeesick officiating.

Burial will be follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with military rites being preformed by the Alton VFW Post 1308.

Memorials may be made to Tree House Wild Life Center in Dow, IL.
