Joyce Evans
Godfrey |
Joyce (George) Evans passed away on Tuesday, March 08, 2011 at her home in Godfrey.
She was born June 30, 1930, in Tarkio, Missouri, to Margaret Mildred (Davis) and Robert Wilfred George. She was baptized and confirmed in the United Presbyterian Church in Tarkio. Joyce graduated from Tarkio High School and Tarkio College and taught Speech and Theatre in Villisca, Iowa.
On August 12, 1953, Joyce was united in marriage to John G. (Jack) Evans and moved to Pittsburgh, PA, where her husband was attending The Presbyterian Seminary. After Jack’s graduation, the family served churches in Pittsburgh, PA, New Kensington, PA, and for 27 years at The Jennings United Presbyterian Church in Jennings, Missouri.
Joyce was a volunteer with Head Start, taught preschool in Normandy, and was a librarian in the Ferguson-Florissant School District for 14 years after earning her Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia. The Evanses considered the St. Louis area as their “home” so they decided to retire on three acres north of Edwardsville, IL. Joyce remained active in church activities, Chapter KH P.E.O., and a twelve step program. Survivors include: one son, George, and daughter-in-law, Grace, of Godfrey, IL; one daughter, Margaret (Meg), and son-in-law, Marvin Wrisinger, of Lexington, Missouri; four grandchildren, Michelle and John Evans of Godfrey, IL, and Carli and Jack Wrisinger of Lexington, MO; one sister, Jean Wheatley, and husband, Stan, of Casper, WY; and dear nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by identical twin daughters; two brothers, Fred George and Weyman “Wink” George; and Wink’s wife, Beverly.
A memorial service will be at 12 Noon Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the College Avenue Presbyterian Church in Alton with Pastor Jeff Heil officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her honor to the scholarship fund at College Avenue Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1081, 1702 Clawson Street, Alton, IL, 62002.
