Josephine B. Dickson, 98, alumna of Charity Hospital School of Nursing, New Orleans, LA and nurse anesthetist at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alton and for her husband, Dr. Ralph A. Dickson for his private dental practice, died at home on December 5.
Mrs. Dickson is preceded in death by her parents, nine siblings and eight of their spouses, her husband Dr. Ralph A. Dickson and her oldest son Tom C. Dickson.
She was an active volunteer in the St. Joseph’s Ladies’ Auxiliary for many years serving as chairperson for the hospital’s winter Snow Ball. She also worked to grow the membership subscriptions in the Greater Alton Concert Association during its early years. In addition, she participated in the ladies’ group at Lockhaven Country Club where she earned numerous winnings for various golfing events; however, the love of her life was her family and home. Other interests included bridge and her yard and gardens. This latter activity yielded her congratulatory citations of honor by Pride Incorporated.
Surviving are her son Tom’s widow Karen Biety of Millcreek, WA, and her daughters Ann Lynne Dickson of Alton, IL, and Verna Jo Dickson, Ph.D. of St. Louis, MO, and Ralph A. Dickson and his wife Susan of Tampa, FL.
Per her request Mrs. Dickson is donating her body to Saint Louis University Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology. A memorial service will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Alton, IL; The Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters (commonly called Pink Sisters), Mount Grace Convent, PO Box 16459, St. Louis, MO 63125-0459; the 5 A’s Animal Shelter, Godfrey, IL; Pride Incorporated,5800 Godfrey Road - Alden Hall Godfrey, IL 62035, or to a charity of your choice.
