Former Alton resident, Joseph V. Goeken, 90, passed away peacefully on January 19th at University Hills Health & Retirement Center in Pensacola Florida.
Born in Alton on April 8, 1921, he was the only child of Joseph F. Goeken and Julia Watkins Goeken. He attended St. Mary’s Grade School, Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie du Chien, WI and graduated from Chaminade College Prep School in St. Louis, MO in 1939 and the University of Notre Dame in 1943.
He married the former Virginia Fischer on January 26, 1950. Virginia died in 1990.
Joe Goeken was president of Noll’s Bakery until it was sold to Colonial Bakery in 1962. He continued as president of Noll’s Ice Cream and Frozen Food Company until 1968 when he relocated his family to Pasadena, California where he was a licensed audiologist. He was a volunteer at the Norton Simon Art Museum after retiring. Joe remained in California until November of 2009 when he moved to Pensacola, Florida to be near his oldest son, Joseph F. Goeken.
During his Alton years, Mr. Goeken was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Knights of Columbus, Alton Rotary, and founding member of Lockhaven Country Club. Joe was an avid reader and sports fan, as well as a devoted Notre Dame alumnus. He enjoyed travel, the outdoors and painting with watercolor.
Surviving are his three daughters and four sons-in-law, Jonie and Tom Corrigan of Wheaton, IL, Julie and Don Meyer of Issaquah, WA, Tom Mills of Pasadena, CA and Jennifer and Laurent Delamare of Los Altos, CA; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Joseph F. Goeken of Pensacola FL, Randy and Franca Goeken of San Clemente, CA and Tom and Cheryl Goeken of Lake Oswego OR; seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm Friday, January 27, 2012 at Staten Fine Funeral Home in Alton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am Saturday, January 28, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Alton.
