Joseph P. Chiado

Joseph P. Chiado, 91, passed away at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011 at his home.

  He was born Oct. 31, 1919 in Mt. Clare, Ill., the son of Peter and Alice Chiado.

  A graduate of Benld High School, Joe was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.  He had worked at Western Cartridge in East Alton, and later worked as credit union manager for Owens-Illinois Glass for 28 years, retiring in 1977.  He later worked as a bailiff for Madison County Courts for 10 years and the Rosewood Heights Sanitary District.  He also was a precinct committeeman and a trustee for the former St. Kevin’s Catholic Church.  He was a former member of the Wood River Eagles Lodge and a member of the Wood River Moose Lodge.  Joe loved baseball, bowling, and golfing.

  Joe married Mary Esther Franz Feb. 1, 1942 in St. Charles, Mo.  She passed away March 14, 2011.

  He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Nelson Gregory of Bethalto; grandchildren, Jim and his wife Shelly Gregory, and Donna Lamble; great grandchildren Tara and her husband Josh Blocher, Brooke Gregory, and Kyle and Erin Lamble; a niece and her husband, Barbara and J.W. Pulliam of Galatia, Ill.; a great nephew and his wife Allan and Angie Pulliam and their children; and other nieces and nephews, Tim and Jackie Barnish, Betty Hurd and Judy Kokoska.

  In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Angela Barnish and Marge Ameidi.

  Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, May 9 at Paynic Home for Funerals, with a prayer service at 4 p.m.

  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 10 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church by Father Thomas Liebler.

   Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

  Memorials may be made to Our Lady Queen of Peace Church.
