Joseph “Joe” S. Mormino, 89, died Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 3:10 p.m. at Saint Anthony’s Health Center in Alton. He was born February 5, 1921 in Napoleonville, Louisiana the son of Charles and Rosa Dipasquale Mormino.
On July 2, 1947 at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church in Batchtown, IL he married Frances Sievers and she survives. He was a WWII veteran serving with the U.S. Army 324th Infantry Regiment , 44th Division. He retired after 20 years from the Alton Fire Department. He later worked for the Madison County Assessor office in Edwardsville for 10 years. He was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. VFW Post 1308, the Alton Eagles Foe No. 254 and he volunteered at Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in Alton.
Besides his wife he is survived by two sons: Joe Mormino and his wife Joyce of Alton, and Jim Mormino and his wife Lana of Bethalto, IL. Three grandchildren; Alison Mormino, Lara Mormino and Derek Mormino. One brother; Tony and his wife LaCreta Marmino of Wood River, and one sister; Anna and her husband Joe McCarthy of Bethalto. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by; three brothers; Angelo Marmino, Ernie Mormino and Sam Marmino. Two sisters; Virginia Oliver and Verna Fenton.
Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Gent Funeral Home with a prayer service at 3:00 p.m. A mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Moneme Nnamdi as celebrant.
Burial will be at Saint Joseph Cemetery with full military honors with VFW Post 1308 in Alton.
Memorials may be made to Saint Mary’s Catholic Church Building fund or Saint Anthony’s Hospice.
