John S. Cassella, 88, passed away at 3:15 a.m. on Monday, February 21, 2011 at his residence.
He was born on December 20, 1922 in Alton, IL the son of William and Martha (Stanley) Cassella.
He married Janet Sharkey on December 16, 1949 in Alton, IL. She preceded him in death in May of 2003.
John served his country in the U.S. Army, during WWII in the 12th Armored Division. He then went on to achieve his Bachelor degree at the University of IL. He was employed at the Sinclair oil company till his retirement. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Alton, IL and the Alton VFW Post 1308. He also enjoyed antique autos and golfing.
He is survived by; a brother, Bill Cassella of Bainbridge Island, WA; four nephews, John & Claire Cassella of Salem, MA, Steve & Carol Cassella of Bainbridge Island, WA, Mark & Lisa Cassella of Hasting on the Hudson, NY and Kent Cassella of Burlington, VT; eight great nieces and nephews; one cousin and her husband, Zoe Ann & Dan Williams of Godfrey and a very dear friend, Jackie Sweeney of Alton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Visitation will be from 10 am till time of service at 11 am on Saturday, February 26, 2011, at the Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home, in Godfrey with Rev. Brett Hendrickson officiating.
Burial will follow at the Alton City Cemetery in Alton, IL, with Military Honors by the Alton VFW Post 1308.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
