John Newton

Alton |

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John “Tim” Newton, at the age of 84, on January 31, 2025, in Upper Alton, Illinois. Born on December 6, 1940, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Tim lived a life full of adventure, humor, and dedication.

Tim is survived by his loving wife, Gabriele Newton. His children, Valerie Benson, Brian Newton, and Elizabeth Newton, and his grandchildren Skyler Von der Launitz, Malia Benson, Andrew Hartfileld, Jade Sullivan (Peter), and great-grandson Sage Sullivan; his stepchildren, Torsten Schweickart (Marianne), Sybille Woods (DeMarco), Bernd Schweickart, and grandchildren Torsten Bernd Schweickart, KyErra Elliot, Niy, Javon, Jaxon (Woods) and his great-grandchildren Kamden, Kennedy, ZaNova, Kacie and Cornell to recount his tales.

Tim’s adopted family in Guatemala will also keep his memory alive.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Genevieve Newton, and his siblings: Richard Newton, George Newton, and Elizabeth Ankeny.

A long-time employee of TWA, Tim had a successful 33-year career in the airline industry, retiring at the age of 59—after getting hurt at work. Tim had many passions: fishing, traveling, and exploring his Southwest roots.

He found joy in unique experiences, such as traveling by chicken bus with Gabriele to visit Oscar Peren in Comalapa. Tim and Gabriele shared a love of adventure, including their travels to New Zealand to savor his favorite lamb chops, and fishing Halibut in Alaska. He fondly remembered times spent smoking with his buddy Gerry in Holland, drinking Erdinger with Herbert and Inge, and sharing a beer or whiskey with family and friends on his patio or at the Woods’ Garage.

Tim’s love of life and his spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His legacy of kindness, humor, and adventure lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched throughout his journey.

In honor of Tim’s life, family and close friends are invited to join us for a celebration of his life in June. Instead of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Cathy M. Williams and Sons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
