John H. Hooker, M.D.

John H. Hooker, M.D., 87, died at 2:16 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Alton Memorial Hospital.

He was born September 30, 1924 in Dixon, MO the son of the late Henry Greenleaf and Grace Frances (Wells) Hooker. Dr. Hooker completed his bachelor degree in three years at The University of Missouri and then graduated from the Univ. of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis. He served his residency at The Kansas City General Hospital before beginning his general practice in Clarksville, MO., where he delivered 35 babies. He then served two years in the Army Medical Corps at The Pentagon. With an interest in Radiology he came to the St. Louis City Hospital to do a residency under the teaching of Dr. Armand Brodeur for three years. In 1961 he came to Alton Memorial Hospital to practice with Dr. Arthur Brewer and became Chief of Radiology in 1969 until his retirement in 1984. During his time at Alton Memorial he was Chief of Staff on two occasions, a member of the Executive Board, President of The Madison County Medical Society, member of the Illinois State Medical Society and a member of RSNA—Radiological Society of North America. He was a member of The Evangelical United Church of Christ in Godfrey, a founding member of Pride, In., past board member of the Great Rivers Land Trust Dr. Hooker loved reading history books, bulldogs, feeding birds and animals, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Missouri Tigers.

On April 26, 1952 in Clarksville, MO he married the former Betty Lou (Wells) and she preceded him in death on August 15, 1996. Surviving are a daughter; Jennifer L. Hooker of Godfrey, nieces and nephews; Don R. Lindsay (Jane) of Sun Lakes, AZ, Karen Sellers (Jerry) of Ava, MO, Ann Carroll Wells of St. Louis, John S. Wells of St. Louis, Linda Lindsay of Lake Wales, FL, many beloved great nieces and nephews and his cat, Sam. On Feb. 28, 1998 he married the former Marlene A. (Riley) of Alton. She survives as well as her children; Linda Wickenhauser (Jim) of Godfrey, Billie Rice of St. Louis and Pamela Wahl of Brighton. He was preceded in death by a sister; Donna Lindsay and a nephew; Keith Lindsay.

Visitation will be from noon until 2:00 pm Tuesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton followed by a private funeral service. Burial will be at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.
