John Frederick Duggan, 82, died peacefully at 3:33 a.m., Saturday, June 25, 2016 at his residence under the loving care of his family.
He was born in Jerseyville on Sept. 22, 1933, one of three children born to John M. & Elizabeth K. (Heitzig) Duggan.
After the early death of his father, John's mother moved the family back to her childhood home in Fieldon. He graduated from Jersey Township High School, and served his country proudly with the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. He owned & operatedDuggan's TV and Electric in Fieldon for over 30 years, and retired in 1993 from the United States Postal Service where he served as the rural mail carrier for Fieldon.
John was a many of varied interests and could carry on a conversation about anything with anyone. Aviation was his passion, and he attended Lewis & Clark Community College in Godfrey, where he attained his instrument rating andcommercial pilots license. After retirement, John and Betty enjoyed traveling throughout the country with their airport club friends.
Very community oriented, John was a member of the Fieldon Volunteer Fire Department and the Fieldon Booster Club, along with St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon, as well as a lifetime member of the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492.
He married the former Betty A. Stemmler on April 19, 1958 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon, and together they built a beautiful life together forming a family a close knit and loving family.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Duggan of Fieldon; four children & their spouses, Darlene & Richard Schannot of Godfrey, John Wayne & Tammy Duggan of Fieldon, Connie & Jeff Blackorby of Jerseyville, and Sharon & James Lumma of Godfrey; Nine grandchildren & their spouses, Barbie & Kevin McCormick of Dow, Dean & Sarah Schannot of Jerseyville, John & LindseyDuggan and Liz Duggan all of Fieldon, Chrissy & Chris McElyea of Jerseyville, Beau Blackorby and Brittney Blackorby both of Jerseyville, and Tyler Lumma and Marcus Lumma both of Godfrey; Eight Great Grandchildren, Aubrey, Libby and Emma McCormick, Hudson & Bentley Schannot, Bayley Duggan, Ezra and Gabriel McElyea; his sister & brother in law, Lelia &Gervese Roundcount of Eldred; along with many nieces and nephews and their families, and some very dedicated and loving caregivers.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Duggan on Aug. 13, 2012.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where a Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., Wednesday at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon with Father William Hembrow officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Fieldon with the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducting military graveside rites.
Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville or to the Jersey County Health Department.
