John E. “Jack” Rice, 83, died Monday November 15, 2010 at 11:37 p.m. with his family by his side at his residence.
He was born March 24, 1927 in Fairmont, West Virginia the son of the late Howard N. and Lillian (Barrett) Rice. He retired after 47 years from Owens Illinois Glass in Alton as a mold maker. He was a member of Godfrey Congregational Church, Piasa Masonic Lodge #27 AF&AM and a longtime member of the Sportsman’s Club in Godfrey.
On June 17, 1972 in Alton he married Elaine Zarges and she survives. Also surviving are three daughters; Rebecca Sue Frey and her husband William of Laguna Niguel, CA, Mary June “Jill” Bowker and her husband Gary of Brighton and Cindy Normann of Fenton, MO, one son, Jayson Pine and his wife Michelle of Brenham, TX. Seven grandchildren; William Frey III, Gary Bowker Jr., Major John Bowker, Carrie-Margaret Hourigan, Andrew Duggan, Amanda Duggan, and Lydian Pine. He was preceded in death by two sons; Joseph Howard Rice and John E. “Jack” Rice Jr. and one sister, Betty Rollins. The family has a special thank you to Crystal from BJC Hospice.
Visitation will be Thursday, November 18, 2010 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Gent Funeral Home in Alton, with a Masonic service at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 19, 2010 at Gent Funeral Home with Reverend Frank Sparks to officiate.
Burial will be at Brighton Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to BJC Hospice, Diabetes Association or American Cancer Society.
