John A. “Jack” Scanlon Jr., 83, passed away at 6:52 am, Thursday, October 18, 2012 at St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton, IL.
He was born in Alton, IL on January 20, 1929 the son of the late John Sr. and Helen Sanders. Jack was raised by his uncle and aunt, Ray and Edna Hendricks.
On August 26, 1950 he married Patricia Calame in Alton. She preceded him in death.
Jack served in the U.S. Armed Forces from 1947 to 1951. He worked in the Blue Print Reproductions department for McDonald Douglas for over 30 years. He was a member of the VFW Post 1308, Alton Eagles Lodge, Alton Sportmans Club and was a two time Golden Gloves boxer. He also enjoyed dancing, traveling, gardening, woodworking, and working with stained glass.
He is survived by two daughters; Melissa Wright of Springfield, IL, Joni Honke of Godfrey, IL; one son, John A. Scanlon III of Godfrey; four grandchildren, Brittany Scanlon, Meghan Murphy-Budds, Bethany Wright, Daniel Maher; one great granddaughter, Finley Budds, and a beloved companion, Janet Hobbe.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Dennis Honke.
Visitation will be at 10 am, Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, IL, where Memorial Services will follow at 11 am. Military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team.
Inurnment will follow at Godfrey Cemetery in Godfrey, IL.
Per his wishes, cremation rites were accorded.
Memorials may be made to the VFW Post 1308.
