Joe was born February 5, 1934, on the family farm in Riceville, Iowa along with his twin, JoAnn. They were the youngest of seven children to Merwin and Ruth Noble.
The twins were educated in a one room country school for the first eight years of education. While in high school, Joe was active in both music and sports activities. He attended Greenville College, Greenville, Illinois for one year and then completed his college degree at Luther College Decorah, Iowa in 1956.
Upon graduation, he served two years in the United States Army as a Chaplin’s assistant at Ft. Chaffey, Arkansas. His graduate work was done at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa.
Joe began and ended his choral music teaching career at Greenville College. He also taught at Sioux Falls College in South Dakota, and Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, and was on the faculty of Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais, Illinois from 1976-1999. He was “in his glory” when given the opportunity to conduct the Messiah as well as other major choral works.
Joe married Evelyn Leiske on July 17, 1992. Together they shared their love for music ministry in the church.
Joe loved to travel. By car, he saw each of our 48 states on the mainland. He traveled throughout Europe numerous times, either as a tourist or as a member of the U.S. Choir. And, during his retirement, he spent two years in Taiwan, teaching English and conducting a city-wide orchestra in Kaoshiung. This opportunity was indeed a high point in Joe’s career.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, 5 brothers: Harlan, Weston, Lowell, Dale, and Russell. He is survived by his twin sister JoAnn, sister-in-law’s Dixie and Alice, and a host of nieces and nephews.
