Jerome L. Thompson, 83, of Du Quoin, IL, born April 7, 1941, in St. Louis, MO, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his loved ones.
Jerry was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He worked as a police officer in St. Louis City for two years before becoming a firefighter for the St. Louis City Fire Department. He served 31 years before his retirement and was directly responsible for saving two lives during his service.
Jerry actively participated in Alcoholics Anonymous for 36 years and was proud to be a sponsor to many, helping others to achieve and maintain sobriety.
Jerry obtained his pilot’s license and enjoyed Aviation. He also enjoyed weekends spent at car shows, meeting many others with similar interests.
In retirement he enjoyed target shooting, spending Thanksgiving in KC with Mark and family and 4th of July in his home with all the family together.
Serving others was his passion and he always made time to be available to anyone who needed him.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Lynn (Thompson) and Marie (Allen); and his brother, Richard Thompson.
He is survived by his sister, Kathy Kelsey; his two sons, Mark Thompson (Kelly Hoffman Thompson) and Mike Thompson (Julie Horton); six grandchildren, Samantha, Megan, Chad, Trevor, Abby, and Carlie; two great-grandchildren, Dallas and Douglas; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Funeral: Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2025, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO, with Deacon Corby Valentine officiating. Family and friends please meet at 9:15 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2025, in the large parking lot on the left-hand side of Sheridan Road.
Burial with honors will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.
