James Thomas Voss Sept. 2, 1939-Aug. 22, 1921
Born at home in Alton, IL on September 2, 1939, to Leo John and Rose Hartmann Voss. Jim graduated from Marquette High School in 1957 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Geology from St. Louis University. In 1974, Jim completed the Master of Science in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Hawaii. Jim's early years were spent in Alton before moving west to Elko, NV in 1977. The move allowed Jim to pursue a career working outdoors which was his childhood dream. In 1986, Jim and Rita moved from Elko, NV to Placerville, CA where Jim retired from the US Forest Service. In retirement, Jim enjoyed visiting and following his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed windsurfing in the California Delta region. Jim and Rita would travel annually to Maui to enjoy the surf and friends. Jim suffered a stroke in 2008. Jim and Rita continued their travels to Maui and as long as they could. Jim thoroughly loved his family and friends and helping those in need.
Jim is survived by his wife of 61 years Rita Harris Voss and their children, Paul, Matt and Paula, Tom and Robin, Anne and Chris, Laura and Jeff, Mike and Brigit. He was blessed with 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, his six siblings, his son Chris, and his grandson Nathanial.
There will be a memorial service planned in Alton, IL in the summer of 2022. Specific details to be announced prior to the services. Donations can be made to the Crisis Food Center, 21 East 6th Street, Alton, IL, 62002.
