James "Sonny" F. Carter, 77, passed away at 8:05pm on Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at Select Specialty Hospital in St. Charles, Missouri. He was born on February 2, 1935, in Alton, Illinois the son of the late James and Lillian (Levi) Carter. He married the former Janette Davis on March 25, 1989, in Alton and she survives. Other survivors include three sons and two daughters in law: Jay and Dana Carter of Alton, Jamie and Linda Carter of Brighton, David Carter at home, two grandchildren: Jennifer Carter and Mallory Carter both of Brighton, two step - grandchildren: Ryan Waymire of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Rachel Waymire of Chicago, three brothers and two sisters in law: Paul and Pat Carter of Brighton, Bobby Carter of Alton, George and Debby Carter of Alton, brothers in law: Bill Faust of Alton, Gene Hanner of Bunker Hill, and Jim Davis and his wife; Roxy of Godfrey.

He was formerly employed at Laclede Steel as an operator in the wire mill for 41 years prior to his retirement in 1993. He was a member of the Fosterburg Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army and he served in the reserves. Jim liked to collect patriotic memorabilia. He enjoyed spending time outdoors whether he was planting flowers or grilling. He loved being with his family as well as his church family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters: Lillian, Edna, Vivian, Betty, Mary Lou, two brothers: William, and Harry.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be on Thursday, January 3, 2013 from 4pm to 8pm at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Friday, January 4, 2013 at Fosterburg Baptist Church. Pastor Troy Crain will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with full military honors by the Ritual Team of VFW Post 1308 of Alton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the education fund for David Carter and will be accepted at the funeral home.
