James Halloway

James S. Halloway, age 87, formerly of Bunker Hill, left his earthy home at 4:15 a.m. Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Blu-Fountain Manor. He was born in Lorraine, Ohio, August 17, 1925, the only child of Charlotte Dunnagan and James Smith Halloway. He attended Alton schools and enlisted in the Seabees and served in WWII from 1941-1946. He returned home and began his career as a meat cutter, working in various stores in the Alton area. After 38 years, he retired in 1978. He and the former Alice Froebel were married on May 25, 1974 in Alton. He was a member of the American Legion Post 578 in Bunker since 1975 and served as Commander for over 10 years. He never met a stranger, he loved helping people. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a helpful neighbor. He was a member of Godfrey First Methodist Church and volunteered with whatever was needed. He enjoyed all sports. He was an avid Cardinal baseball fan and watched all the games. Survivors include his wife Alice, a grandson, Steven (Sunny) Halloway of Montana, great-grandchildren, Brittany and Brandon Halloway, three brothers, Gary (Betty) Halloway of San Angelo, TX, Donald (Mary) Halloway of Princeton, KY, and Bobbi (Joann) Halloway of Grazie, KY, a sister, Lucy Goodwin of Eddyville, KY. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Halloway of Glendale, AZ, two sisters-in-law, Esther Froebel of Alton, and Carol Froebel of Bunker Hill. He was preceded in death by his parents, his only son, Steven of Glendale, AZ, and a brother-in-law, Earl Froebel and his little Yorkie, “Skeeter.” A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, February 10, 2013 at the Godfrey First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Bunker Hill Cemetery. Reverend Don E. Long Jr. will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Godfrey First Methodist Church or the 5A’s Animal Shelter.
