James R. Cain, 82, passed away at 7:45pm, November 21, 2013 at his residence, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Philo, IL on January 21, 1931, the son of the late Vincent and Ellen (Daly) Cain.
He married Katherin R. Robbins on June 11, 1955 in Champaign, IL. She preceded him in death.
James earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business at the University of Illinois. He served as a Corporal in the US Army in Berlin during the Korean War and proposed to Katherin Robbins in Paris, where she was attending the Sorbonne. James began his career at the old Owens-Illinois glass mill in Alton. He transferred with his growing family first to St. Charles, Ill., and then Jacksonville, Fla., where he moved to Alton Box Board and eventually transferred back to Alton before retiring at Jefferson Smurfit. He worked over 40 years as an Industrial Relations Manager. He enjoyed reading, sports and crossword puzzles. He also coached his sons in baseball, and he was an avid Cubs fan.
He is survived by six children; James Timothy Cain of Godfrey; Mark (Jacqueline) Cain of Godfrey, Molly Cain of Alton, Suzy Cain of Alton, Margaret (Ken) Bean of Alton, and Steve (Jerilyn) Cain of Adams, TN; fifteen grandchildren, Zachary Cain, William Cain, Nick and Kendall Cain, Tony and Katie Cain, Matt Cain, Monica and Jeff Hardin, Aileen and Claire Chickey, Josh Bean, Michael Jolly, Maya Cain, Alli, Ben, and Tyler Richmond, and Micah Cain; along with three great-grandchildren, Audrey, Caroline, and Silas.
In addition to his parents and wife, Katherin, he was preceded in death by four sisters; Eileen Kennedy, Ann Yocius, Agnes Redmond, and Eleanor Cain.
Visitation will be from 10 am until time of mass at 11 am on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton with Father Peter Donohoe and Monsignor Kenneth Steffen as celebrants.
Inurnment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey.
Memorials may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
