James O. Grant, 68, died at 3:17 p.m. Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born August 18, 1946 in Alton, he was the son of Oliver H. and Doris (Chase) Grant. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and was a former member of the VFW Post 1308. He loved camping and fishing. He was a dispatcher for the Alton Police Department and the Madison County Sheriff’s Department retiring in 2000. He then worked for the Grandpa’s Store, Value City, Conoco Phillips as a security guard and McConahey’s Floral, retiring in 2011. On July 15, 2005 he married the former Barbara Compton. She survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Rhonda Brinkman (Steve) of Alton, a son, Jeff Grant (Jude) of Bethalto, four step daughters, Marissa Baker (Perry) of Worden, Katie Bornes of Wood River, Niki Bornes of Denver, CO, and Kelli Bornes of Alton, 9 grandchildren, Natalie Masulla, Mandie Hamrick (Roy), Alyssa, Maraya, Jorden, and Caden Baker, Richie Gabriel, Lori Podhorn, and Alexa Bornes, three great grandchildren, Micah, Tabitha and Jonah Hamrick, one brother, Duane Grant (Nancy) of Potterville, MI, two sisters, Diane Ukena (Marshall) of Alton and Barbara Lanham of Wood River, and two sisters-in-law, Cathy Grant of Alton and Debbie Grant of Wilsonville, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Larry and Robert Grant. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308. Reverend Steve Rice will officiate. Burial will be private. Memorials may be made to the Tree House Wildlife Center. Online guestbook and information may be found at
