James Davis

Glen Carbon |

James “Jim” R. Davis, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at 2:42 pm Wednesday, October 12, 2011 in Glen Carbon, IL.  He resided many years in Bunker Hill with former son-in-law, James Modglin before moving to Glen Carbon to be with his daughter, Joyce Modglin and Dave Baumgartner.

 

He was born on March 7, 1921 in Harrisburg, IL, the son of Robert and Ina (Cox) Davis.  

On August 2, 1941 Jim and Margaret “Corky” Eller were married in East Alton, IL.  While married, Jim and Corky resided in Godfrey, East Alton and Keysport during their 61 years of marriage.  She preceded him in death on September 6, 2002 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

James served his country in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific during WW II. He retired from Standard Oil in 1962 and later worked in security at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville.  He was a member of the VFW Post 3523 of Carlyle and Disabled American Veterans.  He was an avid sportsman, in his 90 years of life he generously shared and taught the love of fishing and hunting with many. Special times will be remembered by his son, Don, grandson, Robbie and great grandsons, Tyler and Kyle who shared his love for hunting and fishing.  Even in his final days, he was dreaming of wildlife and being out in the woods hunting.   

He is survived by a son, Donald “Don” and his wife, JoAnn Davis of Collinsville; a daughter  Joyce Modglin and Dave Baumgartner of Glen Carbon as well as a former son-in-law, Jim Modglin of Bunker Hill; two granddaughters, Kristi and her husband Jeff Admire of Bethalto and Kelli and her husband, Joe Pence of Brighton; two grandsons, Robbie Davis of Carlyle and Brian Davis of Cottage Hills and seven great grandchildren, Tyler Admire, Bradley Pence, Kyle Admire, Megan Pence, Connor Davis, Olivia Davis and Brianna Davis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Gene Davis and Ina (Cox) Davis-Burchell and one sister, Reba (Davis) Huff.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Friday, October 14, 2011 at Elias Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Funeral services will be 10 am on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at the funeral home with Pastor Charles West officiating.

Burial will follow at McKendree Chapel Cemetery in Keysport, IL with military rites by Carlyle VFW Post 3523...

Memorials may be given to BJC Hospice.
