James Henry Benedict, 65, died Saturday, October 27, 2012 at Kindred Hospital in Saint Louis, MO. from injuries stemming from a motorcycle accident in September.
He was born in Dow on July 18, 1947, one of 6 children born to Wilson and Isler Mae (Page) Benedict.
He married the former Connie Lea Oates on December 5, 1964 at the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville and together they shared 45 years together before her death on August 2, 2010.
James grew up in Kane and attended Kane schools through his elemetery and middle school years and graduated from Jersey Community High School. He then went on to work for Duncan Foundry where he spent 18 years and served as President of the Union. Following his time with Duncan Foundry, James served as an EMT for Jersey County before going on to work for American Commercial Barge Lines where he served as Safety Director and later for Olin Corporation where he retired in 2002. James was an active member of the community serving as a Boy Scout Leader for three years in the early 1990's and more recently an active member of the Sons of the Confederacy, The Kane American Legion Post 1038 and a rider with the Patriot Guard.
Surving are a son and daughter-in-law, Gary & Kim Benedict of Lake Ozark, MO; two daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle & David Ewen of Grafton and Marianne and Tony Bowers of Jerseyville; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Brandon) McCoy, Cooper Benedict, Miranda Benedict, Aleigha Ferguson, Ricky Ferguson and Drake Bowers; three great-grandchildren, Tayton Stark and Gavin and Jayden Meyer; two sisters, Betty Gene (George) Miller of Dothan, AL and Crystal (Adrian) Varble of Carrollton; a brother, Rob (Valerie) Benedict of Jerseyville; and dear friends Paul O'Toole of Lynchburg, NC and Mike (Connie) Fair of Jacksonville. In addition to his parents and his wife Connie, James was preceded in death by a brother, A.J. Benedict; a sister, Christine Stull; and a granddaughter, Breanne Ferguson and a great-granddaughter, Tristan Stark on Jan 26, 2012;
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Wednesday, October 31, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be held at 10 AM Thursday, November 1. The Rev. Wilbur Cain will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville with the Kane American Legion Post 1038 conducting military graveside rights.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Family in care of Crawford Funeral Home.
