James Buttry
East Alton | Monday, December 5 2022 |

James Hal Buttry, 68, of East Alton, passed away on Monday, December 5, 2022, at 1:11 pm, peacefully with his family by his side, under the care of BJC Hospice.
James was born on April 26, 1954, in Wood River, IL, the son of Maxey and Blanche (Kinnear) Buttry. He married his beloved wife, Rita Matteson, on October 27, 1973, in Alton, IL. They had a love like no other.
He and his wife, Rita, owned JBUTTRY Construction and Self Service Car Wash. James spent much of his adult years as a highly skilled carpenter and building his businesses for his family. He enjoyed a hard-days work; was proud to work alongside his family and teach the future generations the art of construction and entrepreneurship. In his spare time, James enjoyed family time with family close and extended, his dogs Juju and Coco, archery, and growing cactus.
Along with his wife, Rita, he is survived by his daughter, Cody (Chris) Buttry-Hinkle of Alton; a grandson, Memphis Hinkle; siblings, Charlotte (Dave) Wiegand, Bonnie Gasawski, Grady (Sandy) Buttry, George (Debbie Embry) Buttry, Lisa (Ray) Miller, Burton Buttry, and Michael Kennedy; his treasured nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Linda Wiegand; cousin-in-law, Chris Howard; and special friends Larry Lawrence, Dave Roth, and Brian Gasawski.
James was preceded in death by his parents.
Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 9, 2022, from 10 am until the time of service at 12 pm, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.
Because James was a strong believer in the art of tradesmanship, memorial donations will benefit the YouthBuild program at Lewis and Clark Community College. This program teaches young adults trade skills to become productive members of our community. Memorials can be made to Lewis and Clark Community College Foundation. Please include James Buttry Memorial Gift in the subject line.
