James Graves Martin, 87, passed into God’s grace at 11:19 pm Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at Alhambra Care Center where he and his wife, Avis, have been residents since March.  He recently had taken ill with pneumonia.

He was born on May 14, 1923 in Sikeston, MO, the son of James Graves and Ida Mae (Fitch) Martin.

He graduated Sikeston High School in 1941 and earned an academic scholarship to Westminister College in Fulton.  In 1943 James was drafted into the United States Army where he proudly served in the European theatre as a medical technician and a liaison representative to the division.  Upon returning to the states, James resumed college at Westminister earning his degree in chemistry, graduating in May 1948 and married Avis Marie Bishop in Sikeston, MO, October 10, 1945.  He loved listening to Big Band music, reading and volunteering for the church and other civic duties.

In addition to his loving wife, Avis Bishop Martin, he is survived and will forever be remembered by his beloved sons, James III and Joseph Martin; treasured grandchildren, Benjamin, Whitney and Brianna; caring in-laws, Jackie and Joan Martin, along with countless other friends and family whom were blessed to have known him.  

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 pm Sunday, December 19, 2010 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.  Funeral services will be held at 11 am Monday, December 20, 2010 with Rev. John Tennyson officiating.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Bethalto with full military honors.

Memorials may be made to Bethalto United Methodist Church Building Fund.
