James D. Cox, 73, passed away, unexpectedly at 9:28 pm on Monday, September 18, 2023, at Alton Memorial Hospital.
He was born on December 13, 1949, in Wood River, IL to Dwight and Betty Lee (Smith) Cox.
James married Brenda on March 2, 1968, at Curtie Heights Church in Alton. She survives.
He co-owned, with his son, Jim, Premier Automotive in East Alton for 22 years. One of his most prized possessions was his '55 Chevy that he loved to take cruising.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Jim (Patricia) Cox of Brighton; three grandchildren, Matthew Cox, Rachelle (John) Wright, and Taylor Cox; a special great-granddaughter, Ava Mae Wright; a brother-in-law, Harold (Mary) Scates; a sister-in-law, Shirley Cartwright, and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation rites were accorded.
A Celebration of Life Visitation will be 4:00 pm until time of Memorial Service at 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey. Pastor Terry McKenzie will officiate.
Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Shriners Hospitals for Children.
