James Caffery

James Joseph Caffery, 81, peacefully entered the arms of his Savior at 9:51 pm on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri with many of his family surrounding him.

He was born on February 14, 1943, in Brighton, IL the son of William J. and Ruth Viola (Mellenthin) Caffery. James married Patsy Jean Davis on August 27, 1965, in Bethalto, IL.

James was a member of the First Baptist Church of Brighton. He began his career as a stock clerk at Olin Corporation for 34 years and later found fulfillment in maintaining the Mississippi Valley Christian School. James then returned to work at Olin before he later retired. Among his passions were fishing, camping, and indulging in classic John Wayne movies, but his greatest joy came from the love he shared with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

James is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patsy Caffery of Godfrey, IL; children, Becky Wille (Jim) of Alton, IL, Jim Caffery Jr. (Jenny) of Cincinnati, OH, and Chris Caffery (Jenny) of New Smyrna Beach, FL; grandchildren, Miranda Collins (Dan), Suzanne Heiney (Justin), Abigail Wille, Jericho Caffery, Joy Caffery, Jenesis Caffery, Justice Caffery, Sophia Caffery, and Cullen Caffery; and great grandchildren, Alyssa Collins, Lucas Collins, Liam Collins, Elliot Heiney, Owen Collins, and Emmett Heiney.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his siblings, Betty Arbuthnot, Frances Steward, Mary Barks, Delois McDonough, and Robert Leroy Caffery; and granddaughter, Journey Caffery.

Visitation will be at on Friday, May 31, 2024, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Elias Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton, IL.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 10:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Brighton, IL. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto, IL.
