James Boyd Van Horne Sr., 96, died Sunday, July 31, 2011 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Born June 16, 1915 in Springfield, IL, he was the son of Columbus and Elizabeth Van Horne. He was a longtime resident of Jerseyville, and lived in St. Louis, MO, and Tampa, FL. He had worked for several oil companies in west Texas and also for Shell Oil Company in Wood River. He drove a city bus in Alton and he drove for Western Trucking Company in St. Louis, MO. He also had worked in the water treatment plant system for the Tampa, FL school system. Until recently he was still delivering Senior Meals in Jerseyville. He was an active Mason since 1955. He married Ruth Anne Melton and she preceded him in death. He then married Melza (Eyster) Chappell who also preceded him in death. Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Eileen and Bill Bunte of St. Peters, MO, Janice and Bill Greer of Alton, Teresa and Rick Leiser of Ft. Meyers, FL, and Ann and Kenneth Shaffer of Forksville, Pennsylvania, two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Betty Chappell of Livermore, CA, and James and Karen Van Horne Jr. of Spring, TX, 20 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two children, Maurice Chappell and Barbara Unterbrink. A memorial service will be at a later date. Burial will be private at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
