James Billy Staggs, I, 77, passed away at 7:06 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at his son’s home in Godfrey.
Born June 20, 1933 in Little Grassey, Mo., he was a son of William Preston and Donna Naomi (Miller) Staggs.
He married Georgia L. Lyons Apr. 3, 1956 in Alton. She survives.
A Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was a member of the Wood River VFW and the East Alton American Legion.
He retired in 1985 after 30 years as an electrician for Laclede Steel.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Naomi Staggs of Alton; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Bruce E. and Brenda Staggs of Independence, Mo., Billy D. and Ginger Staggs of Godfrey, James B. Staggs, II and his wife Karen of Cottage Hills, and Brad A. Staggs of Bowling Green, Mo.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Paula R. and Kevin Goodson of Glen Allen, Mo. and Barbara H. and Tony Davidson of Roxana; 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby L. and Velma Staggs of Atlanta, Ga., Kenneth D. and Peggy Staggs of Lilburn, Ga., J.R. and Margie Staggs of Atlanta, and Frank and Diane Staggs of Lithonia, Ga.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Rosetta and Rick Surtani of Bethalto and Doris and Monroe Frazier of Brandon, Miss.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
According to his wishes, his body was donated to medical science.
The family will receive visitors Saturday, July 31 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights from noon until a memorial service is held at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to any humane society to help abused animals.
