80-year-old James Batliner of Alton, died of kidney cancer on February 20, 2011, at 7:00pm.
Gene was born on February 6, 1931, to Martin and Josephine Batliner in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended Holy Cross Grade School and Cardinal Glennon High School in Kansas City. He earned a B.A. degree from St. Mary’s University, Winona, Minn., and attended law school at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.
He served in the U.S. Marines as a Captain.
Professionally, Gene retired as a vice-president at Millers First. He was a CPCU and CLU. He was a 33-year member of Lockhaven Country Club and St. Mary’s Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary (Bernreuter), and five daughters and their spouses: Susan and James Deitz, Sheila Reichmuth, Jeanne and Michael Settles, Sandra and Michael Coffman, and Sarah and Michael Chevlin; two brothers: Richard Batliner of Kansas City, Missouri, and Robert Batliner and his wife JoNell of Overland Park, Kansas; his ten grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Martin Batliner and William Batliner, and one sister JoEllen Sarvella.
Visitation will be from 4:30pm to 7:30pm on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, IL. A rosary service will be held at 4:00pm at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, IL at 10:00am on Friday, February 25, 2001, with Father Jim Walther OMV officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s School in Alton or to The Mayo Clinic for Renal Cancer Research.
