Jacob "Roger" Harmon, a man of integrity and unwavering faith, departed this world on March 6th, 2025, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on January 12th, 1940, in Hardin, Illinois. Roger lived a life marked by service, love, and unyielding commitment to his Lord, family, and friends.
Roger graduated from Hardin High School in 1958. He received his Bachelors of Education and Masters of Education Administration degrees from SIU Edwardsville. Roger was a member of the very first graduation class at the SIUE campus. Roger started his teaching career in 1963. He was employed by the Bethalto School District for 37 years. He retired in 1997. During his career he was awarded the Dale Carnegie Award of Excellence in Teaching.
He served on the Board of Directors for Camp NEO-TEZ, a Christian camp for children for 12 years. He was also a Deacon and Educational Director at the Vaughn Hill Church of Christ. Roger participated in 3 mission trips and was an active member of Orphan Lifeline, International.
Roger’s life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and service, as he lived his life in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, His Lord and Savior.
Roger is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Lois Jean (Oberjohann) Harmon, one son, J. Scott Harmon (Lisa), 4 grandchildren, Kris (Natalie), Matt, Sarah, and Zoie, and a nephew, Gregg Gress (Lisa).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob B. and Ruth Harmon, a son, Timothy Eric, granddaughter, Mazzie Jayne, sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Allie Gress and in-laws, Loren and Clova Oberjohann.
Roger requested to have his funeral in the same manner that he lived his life; simply, humbly and without fanfare. Therefore, service and burial will be private. He will be laid to rest in the Indian Creek Cemetery, Hamburg, Illinois, on Saturday, March 15, 2025. In lieu of flowers, Roger requested that people perform an act of kindness, for someone in need, who could never return the favor.
