Hubert John Droege

Hubert John Droege, 90, died peacefully at 4:15 p.m., Sunday, January 10, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his family.He was born in Meppen on Dec. 16, 1925, and was the son of Herman & Elizabeth (Imming) Droege.Hubert graduated in 1945 from Brussels High School, and served his country honorably with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he was awarded two Purple Hearts for his service and bravery.He was employed with Laclede Steel in Alton for 35 years, and retired in May 1983 as a foreman.  He was an active member of the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492, and for many years was the commander of their funeral color guard.  He was also a member of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, as was as the former Moose Lodge and the Disable American Veterans.He married the former Marion Berniece Hazelwonder on Jan. 29, 1955 at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, and together they shared 45 years and raised a family of six sons, before her passing on Nov. 7, 2000.Surviving are his six sons & daughters in law, Rodney Droege, Dan & Diane Droege, David & Debbie Droege, Chris & Terri Droege, Phil & Becky Droege, and Scott Droege, and his companion, Dora all of Jerseyville; 11 Grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and a sister, RosaleePurvis of Alburquerque, NM.In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Kenneth, Herman, Lawrence, Raymond, Jerome & Anthony Droege; and three sisters, BerdinaDroege, Sister Mary Herman, and Lorraine Bimslager.Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., Thursday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Hembrow officiating.Burial will be in the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery in Jerseyville, where full military rites will be performed.Memorials may be given to either the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 Color Guard or to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic School of Jerseyville.
