Hilmer F. Schoenbaum, 91, of Moro, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at LaBella of Alton.
He was born on October 16, 1932, in Moro, IL, the son of Charles and Louise (Aljets) Schoenbaum. Hilmer married AnnaMae Kruse on May 10, 1952, at St. John's Evangelical Church in Midway. She survives.
Hilmer was a farmer and a family man. Along with his dad and his brother, they started farming using horses and mules then moved to using John Deere tractors. He milked 120 Holstein cows on the farm. Hilmer loved to go to the Farm Progress shows and the Illinois State Fair. He helped build Zion Lutheran Church where he was a baptized and confirmed life-long member, and active in many church activities: the annual sausage supper, the church decorating committee, the men's club, an usher, and the dartball team. He was also a member and officer of Farm Bureau and the Mid-Am Dairy Association. His younger passions included: playing softball, dancing with his wife, and playing cards with his family and friends.
Along with his wife, AnnaMae, he is survived by his children, Kathy Louise (Daniel) Gruen of Walshville, IL, Jeanne Diane (Pat) Cooper of Worden, IL, and Franklin Hilmer (Ann) Schoenbaum of Moro, IL; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Schoenbaum.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jane Schoenbaum; a grandson, Zachary Cooper; a great-granddaughter, Winry A. May; a sister and brother-in-law, Violet and Robert Lane; and a brother, Marlin Schoenbaum.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto. Pastor Kale Hanson and Pastor Brandon Metcalf will officiate. After cremation rites are accorded, inurnment will be held at Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Zion Lutheran Church and/or School in Bethalto.
