Herbert “Herb” Elmer Heaton, age 80, of Dorsey, IL, formerly of Granite City, IL, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at Evercare Nursing Home in Edwardsville, IL. Herb was born on November 3, 1944, in Granite City, IL, a son of the late Harvey and Pearl (Wehling) Heaton.
On April 10, 1965, Herb married the love of his life, Judy Rains, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Granite City, IL. Herb retired as a Master Control Technician from Ameren in Alton, IL, after many years of dedicated service. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed working with his hands, building Broncos, refurbishing old tractors, and building with and carving wood. He never met a stranger, and he was willing to lend a helping hand. Herb will be remembered as a hardworking man, who loved his family and tinkering outside in the garage or yard, always working on one project or another; oftentimes more than one.
In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by four sisters, Thelma Carver, Janet DeGonia, Ileen Edwards and Dorothy White; and four brothers: Lawrence Heaton, Jerry Heaton, Albert Heaton, and Elmer Heaton.
Herb is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Judy (Rains) Heaton of Dorsey, IL, two loving children, Karen Heaton-Sheets of Edwardsville, IL and Herb (Dawn Sheikh) Heaton of Edwardsville, IL, dear sisters, Lorene Christ and Virginia (Larry)Thomas. Also, proud grandfather to Rodney Sheets, Dustin (Nicole) Sheets, Tiffany Sheets, Brenden Heaton and Matthew Heaton, proud great grandfather to Hunter, Henry, Hazel, Wesley and Bryson, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
In celebration of his life, the visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 17, 2025, at Irwin Chapel, Granite City, IL. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, with Pastor Sharon Autenrieth officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Estates, Glen Carbon, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Zion Lutheran Church “School Building Fund” in Bethalto, IL.
