Henry E. Vize, 96, died at 7:40 p.m. Friday, November 1, 2013 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton.
Born October 17, 1917 in St. Louis, MO, he was the son of Walter and Mary Elizabeth Vize. He graduated from Marquette Catholic High School in 1936 and was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Alton and then St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. Mr. Vize was the first Alton resident to be drafted into WWII. He served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater. He worked for Standard Oil in Wood River for over twenty years before retiring from SIU-Edwardsville as a groundskeeper. On June 28, 1947 he married the former Irene Kurtz. She preceded him in death on January 26, 2009.
Surviving is a son and daughter-in-law, Hank and Gail Vize of Godfrey, two grandchildren, Derek Vize of Godfrey and Tammy McIntyre of Edwardsville, and two great granddaughters, Jaden and Riley Willis.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 7, 2013 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. Father Steve Pohlman will officiate. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Louis, MO with full military honors.
