Helen Marie “Jinx” Douglas

Helen Marie “Jinx” Douglas, 80, passed away Monday, May 30, 2011 at her residence, with her family by her side, due to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).  She was born July 21, 1930 in Alton, the daughter of the late Helen (Buckley) and Jesse Terpening.  On October 18, 1947 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, she married Edward D. Douglas Sr. They celebrated 63 years of marriage.  Mrs. Douglas retired from St. Anthony’s Hospital on December 31, 1991; she then began a second career as evening secretary at St. Ambrose Catholic Church.  She was involved in many church activities through the years, remaining as the treasurer for St. Vincent De Paul Society until her death.  She tutored at St. Ambrose School for the past two years in the Volunteer Grandparent Tutoring Program.  An avid bowler, she was the league secretary for Locks and Keys Mixed league for 40 years and had been an Election Judge for numerous years.  Mrs. Douglas leaves behind with cherished memories, her husband; Edward Douglas, Sr., their children; Edward Douglas, Jr., Sharon Newell, Penny Douglas Jestes, David Douglas, Catherine Devening, Timothy Douglas and a very special daughter-in-law; Trudi Douglas (Tim’s wife), thirteen grandchildren, several great grandchildren, one brother; Fred Terpening of Madison, WI, several nieces and nephews, her beloved pets; Jewell, Dakota, Snowflake and Benjamin, and many, many friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister; Hilda “Dukie” Borreson, and two brothers; Robert and Kenneth Terpening.  Visitation will be Thursday, June 2, 2011 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.  A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2011 with Father Steve Polhman presiding and Deacon Bill Kessler assisting,  at St. Ambrose Catholic Church.  Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey.  Memorials may be made to St. Ambrose Catholic Church for masses, The ALS Society, or Riverbend Humane Animal Society in Jerseyville, IL.  Additional information and an online guest book may be found at www.gentfuneralhome.com
