Harry R. Smith, age 79 of Glen Carbon, IL., passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2022, at his residence.
He was born in Granite City, IL on September 18, 1942, the only child to the late Harry H. and Sophia (nee Obryski) Smith. He was a 1961 Granite City High School graduate and retired from Ameren UE as a supervisor after 30+ years of service.
Harry was quite the athlete having played for the Granite City Warriors on the 1960 Sweet 16 basketball team, was an outstanding catcher for the baseball team, and was a member of the Granite City Athletics Hall of Fame. He caught the eye of many scouts. He married his high school sweetheart, Dianne Haneline, on November 25, 1961. Together they raised a family of four children, Kelly, Jay, Amy and Clay. He was active in Boy Scouts and attained the rank of Eagle Scout, was an avid runner, and enjoyed swimming. He might have been a Warrior by heart, but he proudly wore Kahok purple and enjoyed attending Kahok Athletic events. Most of all he loved spending time with his family.
Surviving is his loving wife, Dianne Smith; his four children, Kelly LaPeire of Granite City, IL, Jay Scott (Christopher) Smith of Denver, CO, Amy (Jeff) Haskenhoff of Freeburg, IL, and Clay (Robin) Smith of Maryville, IL; seven grandchildren: Jarred LaPeire, Jacob LaPeire, Drake Weissert, Kendall Weissert, Layne Smith, Holden Smith, and Taylor Haskenhoff.
Memorial visitation will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, August 5, 2022, at Barry Wilson Funeral Home, Maryville, IL.
Memorial mass will be at 12 noon following the visitation at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 155 N. Main Street, Glen Carbon, IL with Father Patrick Gibbons celebrant. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Glen Carbon.
